CASE STUDY

Website Strategy & Copywriting: Eye Laser Specialists

A strategic messaging, UX and content overhaul for one of Melbourne’s leading laser eye surgery clinics.

This healthcare website copywriting case study shows how strategic messaging, UX thinking and SEO-aware copywriting transformed the online presence of a leading Melbourne eye clinic. Through a combination of website strategy, information architecture, brand voice development and content design, the project improved patient engagement while preserving valuable organic search performance.

The challenge

At first glance, this looked like a straightforward website refresh. In reality, it was a project with competing priorities at every turn.

Eye Laser Specialists had built strong organic visibility over five years in practice, but the website no longer reflected the clinic’s brand image.

The messaging centred on the lifestyle concept ‘Life is a beautiful adventure’, supported by bright colours and generic stock photography. It felt more like a travel brand than a specialist medical practice and did little to build authority or trust.

At the same time, the clinic’s strong search rankings couldn’t be compromised. A complete rewrite and redesign needed to preserve years of hard-earned SEO value while creating a significantly better experience for prospective patients

Most importantly, the project had to navigate strict AHPRA advertising regulations, requiring many claims and emotionally driven messages to be reconsidered or removed.

This wasn’t simply a copywriting project.

It was a balancing act.

The strategy

People considering laser eye surgery aren’t looking for adventure. They’re looking for answers.

That single insight changed every decision that followed.

It meant that instead of starting with the copy, I started with the patient and what they’re asking:

  • Am I suitable?
  • Which treatment is right for me?
  • Can I trust this clinic?
  • What happens next?

That insight became the foundation for the entire project.

The transformation

Clinical expertise matters. But trust and confidence are what move patients from consideration to action. Every design and messaging decision had one purpose: reduce uncertainty.

Elective surgery is a big decision. Before people are ready to book, they need to understand their options, trust the clinic and know what to expect. Every element of the rewrite and redesign, from the messaging and website structure to the photography and user journey, was created to remove uncertainty and build confidence.

Here’s how it played out.

Repositioning the brand

Why this matters

Most competitors led with technology and procedures. The opportunity was to differentiate through a more human, consultative approach that balanced clinical expertise with reassurance, trust and informed decision-making.

The website shifted from lifestyle marketing to patient-centred communication, helping visitors understand the clinic’s service and value before asking them to take action. From the information flow, to messaging and calls to action, copy was designed to build confidence before asking patients to commit.

The thinking

The original section asked ‘Who are you?‘ and attempted to persuade visitors using broad lifestyle personas and aspirational messaging. The long-form descriptions took time to read, and the emotional language was non-compliant.

Rather than asking visitors to identify with a persona, I reorganised the content around the reasons people actually seek vision correction. Asking ‘What brings you here today?‘ changes the entire relationship between the website and the visitor. The site stops talking at people and starts helping them solve a problem.

To offer visitors a secondary pathway to treatment options, I segmented messaging by life stage. Both segments were designed to improve relevance, reduce cognitive load and create clearer routes to the most suitable information.

The result

The original experience focused on selling the destination. The redesigned experience focuses on guiding patients through the journey and reducing uncertainty by clearly explaining what to expect. By replacing emotional persuasion with transparency, education and realistic expectations, the website now supports informed healthcare decisions while aligning with AHPRA advertising requirements.

Business impact

The success of the rewrite and redesign was measured by how effectively it supported prospective patients through their decision-making journey.

Following launch:

✓ Organic clicks increased 27%

✓ Google impressions increased 22%

✓ Engaged users increased 21%

✓ Average engagement time increased 17%

✓ Booking starts increased 154%

✓ Booking progression increased 161%

✓ Primary keyword laser eye surgery Melbourne retained its #1 ranking.

Strategic principles applied

This project demonstrates that effective website strategy isn’t just about writing better copy. It’s about helping people make better decisions.

By reducing uncertainty, strengthening trust and preserving years of SEO authority, the rewrite created a more confident patient experience without compromising commercial performance.

  • Start with patient psychology, not product features.
  • Reduce uncertainty before asking for commitment.
  • Replace persuasion with education.
  • Design around decision-making, not internal service categories.
  • Protect existing SEO while improving user experience.
  • Build trust through clarity, authenticity and transparency.
“Overall, we’d consider this a very successful project. The data indicates that the new copy has had a positive impact on organic visibility with stronger impressions and clicks from Google, and our primary keyword, “laser eye surgery melbourne,” continuing to hold a position around #1 . User engagement improved noticeably with total users growing by 6%, engaged users by 21% and average engagement time increasing by 17%.  Booking intent jumped significantly, with Booking Starts up 154% and Booking Steps up 161%.”
